When it comes to home renovations, you may find yourself installing new interior doors. Interior doors are an important part of any home renovation project, but they can be difficult to install and confusing to deal with. Before you replace or add any doors inside your home, there are a few things that you need to know. Here are a couple of things to consider before getting a door replacement.

Should You Buy Prehung Doors?

When you're shopping for replacement doors, you'll have two options. You can buy just the door, which will need to be hung in an existing door jamb, or you can buy a prehung door, which comes with the door jamb and casing attached.

The biggest benefit of opting for a prehung door is the fact that you won't have to worry about drilling holes for the door hinges, measuring for proper alignment, or any of the other necessary details that can affect the balance and operation of your door. You just install the whole assembly in the opening.

However, if you have an existing door jamb that's in good shape and still fits well with the door you want to install, or you're considering reclaimed doors for your replacement, you may decide that it's better to go with just the door.

What Should You Consider When Installing Replacement Doors?

The biggest mistake that many people make when they install doors is not ensuring that the door is square and level when it is installed. You should make sure that the door jamb itself is square, check the door to be sure that it was crafted square, and then measure the pilot holes for the hinges correctly so that the door attaches level.

If the door doesn't fit properly so that it swings freely, you'll need to trim it, either by sanding or shaving the wood until the door fits with free movement. It's in your best interest to have help when you start the installation because it can be difficult to manage with a single set of hands.

These are a few of the most important things to think about when it comes to installing a new door in your house. If you're getting ready to replace your existing doors, talk with a local contractor to ensure that the doors are properly and securely installed. Your contractor can help you find the right doors for each area of your home.
